Barcelona

spain_bcn_boqueria-001

La Boqueria fresh air market – if you can’t find it here, it’s not available! Chocolates, fruit, fish, vegetables, wine, spices – oh my!

spain_bcn_parcguellcollage

A collage I watercolored of images from Parc Guell, a lovely hillside area above Barcelona, enhanced with sculptures, fountains and awesome rock structures all designed by Antoni Gaudi.

spain_bcn_sagradafamilia01

The inspiring Sagrada Familia cathedral, still under construction – each facade represents a different period in the life of Christ.

spain_bcn_calatravatower

Calatrava Tower, a telecommunications tower built for the 1992 Barcelona World Olympics.

spain_bcn_parcguellalcove

A watercolor I did of a magical musical duo,  tucked away in a beautiful cracked tile alcove in Parc Guell.

spain_bcn_arcdetriomf_0

The Arc de Triomf, a miniature version of it’s counterpart in Paris. In Parc Ciutadella, this was created for the 1888 International Exposition in Barcelona.

spain_bcn_fuentemago

The amazing and wonderful Magic Fountain – created for the 1929 World Exposition in Barcelona -  colored lights, dancing fountains and sprays – all choreographed to music both classic & contemporary. This was really quite a wonder, considering it was created long before the digital age.

spain_bcn_montjuicbeauty

One of the many lovely statues in the gardens surrounding the Montjuic World Expo site. This gal had an alluring rear view, but a rather dopey face!

spain_bcn_fontdelgat

Yet another hideaway fountain and garden in the Montjuic World Expo grounds, this one tucked up on the hillside, boasting a romantic little outdoor cafe with an amazing panoramic view of Barcelona.

spain_bcn_bodegamarisol2

A sweet little bodega (wine cellar and cafe) with a nice selection of wines, olive oil, olives – even legs of Iberic ham! You can buy the wine by the bottle or fill up your own container from the selection of wines in the barrel at a good price.

spain_santamariadelmarSanta Maria del Mar (Saint Mary of the Sea) cathedral in Barcelona has this beautiful altarpiece of a tranquil Mother Mary and a surprisingly happy baby Jesus. At her feet is a replica of a 14th century sailing ship, to commemorate the  “bastaixos” the port workers whose hard work by carrying stones on their backs from the Royal quarry on Montjuic helped to build this dear church in only 54 years! Read “Cathedral of the Sea” by Ildefonso Falcones, you’ll never look at this awesome place in the same way!

spain_bcn_casamilapedrera

The Perdrera building, a must-see for every Barcelona bound traveler – it was built originally as an apartment building and designed by Antoni Gaudi. The undulating facade, the iron railings resembling kelp pods and seaweed and the sea green faux finish ceilings are really amazing.

spain_tilesketch2

One of the many charming ceramic tile images seen in the Ceramics museum in the Palau Maria Cristina. There is also a design museum and a textile museum in this lovingly restored former palace. The painted ceilings and mouldings are really magnificent – look up!
