Wall Art in Cuba

Tupoc on the wall in Cuba and other beautiful images, beautifully painted on a rather drab crumbling walls in la Habana Vieja (old town Havana). I didn’t see graffiti in Cuba (no spray paint?) but I did marvel at many expertly painted wall murals that were adorning streetside walls and near doorways. Occasionally political, often quite beautiful, sometimes even tragic – but always profoundly contrasting with the gray stone walls; they stood out like butterflies on often depressing disintegrating buildings. I would have dearly loved to have met the artists who crafted such delightful surprises, but I didn’t see any works in progress, unfortunately. The creative arts will always find a way to express themselves!

Cuban Dollies at the Prado

DSCN1361What a little cutie patootie she was, posing with her grandma´s dolls for sale in Havana. They have an art fair on Sundays from 10-2 every week on the Prado; it is a great place to see and buy unique and wonderful artwork in all mediums. Bring a bag of art supplies in your luggage to donate to the teachers and the art center association. I brought watercolor palettes, brushes, paper, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, paint, markers, stickers and more.

Cat´s Afire!

Penny, the Wonder Cat!

My third attempt in oil pastels – a rousing success! I thought, why do just a cat portrait? Penny´s a circus performer at heart – so through the hoop she goes!

Oil pastels are fun, like big gooey crayons – big slashes of color, easily correctable and fun to smear and mix colors – I´m like a big kid again!
